Task 1- Ownership

Ownership

Public Service
A Public Service Broadcaster is a TV company that chooses to benefit the general public's benefits rather than commercial use. For example, the BBC is a public broadcaster because they make you pay for the channel in the TV License. This is effective because you have to pay for it so therefore the BBC has to try and appeal to all sections of the general public. The first benefit of public service broadcasters is that you do not have adverts interrupting programs because they do need the finances that come from advertising. This is effective because this gives them the edge over other competitors as they have to have advertising in order to give them finances. The main disadvantage of Public Service Broadcasters is that they have a duty to the public to serve all parts of the public, this means that it will not always be the most entertaining thing out there.

Commercial
Commercial broadcasters are television companies that rely on funding to be able to run independently. A good example of a commercial company is ITV, as they have funding from companies to run in return they advertise said companies on their channel. This is effective because it is one of the ways they are funded. The main benefit of being a commercial company is that the fact you are privately own means that you can stick to one specific genre or topic. This is effective because it gives you an edge over your competitors. The main disadvantage of commercial companies is that you have to be funded by other companies in order to succeed. This is effective because public companies do not need that type of funding as they are financed by the general public.

Private
Private movie companies are interdependently run companies that rely on revenue from the movies they distribute. An example of private movie are paramount pictures as they rely on financing from their movies. The main benefit of of private companies id that they do not have to worry about finances as they are privately own. The main disadvantage of private companies is that they can go bankrupt as they have to rely on their products for money.

Corporate
Corporate Broadcasters are companies that are financed by corporate companies this means that companies finance them rather than government financed. This is effective because this means they do not have to be government own.

Independent
These are filmmakers that make there film without any major companies financing them. A really successful example is the first Paranormal Activity as the maker only had a £25,000 and he generated a revenue of nearly £2,000,000. That is an amazing profit. This is effe ctive because this really started the mass wave of independent films as they might be as succsessful as Paranormal Activity.

Global companies
These are companies that are recognised globally and they have millions to help finance movies. A good example of a global company is universal pictures as they spend millions on projects and they are one of the global film makers in the world. This is effective because this means they gain mass viewers and generate millions in revenue.

Vertical and horizontal integration
Vertical integration is when a single owner or business buys out the line in making a film. An example of this is Universal Studios as they own the film maker, the production company, the distributor and the cinema its shown in. This is effective because they save money when they make the film. Horizontal integration is when a single owner or company owns many smaller companies. A good example of this is Paramount Pictures as they own smaller companies that act in their name. This is effective as this means that can make more money.

Monopoly
These are companies that completley dominate the market and own most of the competition. A good example of this is News corporation who own most of the entertainment industry This is effective because they own most of the competition and therefore they make loads of money.
